The 28th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) took place from November 30 to December 12 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Supporting the work of the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR), CNIS has contributed to the "Standardization Contributes to Meeting Climate Goals" side event at China Pavilion on December 4, and the "From National Adaptation Plans to Global Climate Action" side event at the Standards Pavilion by ISO on December 6 respectively.
To enhance China's activity level and contribution in the field of carbon peak and neutrality, the Chinese delegation had in-depth communication with representatives from 12 international organizations and national standards bodies, such as ISO, Germany, the U.K., and Singapore. It also made exchanges with more than 60 domestic experts from National Development and Reform Commission, Ministry of Ecology and Environment, China Association of Circular Economy, National Center for Climate Change Strategy and International Cooperation, Chinese Academy of Forestry, etc.
During the "Standardization Contributes to Meeting Climate Goals" side event, Xiao Han, Director General of Standards Innovative Management Department of SAMR, introduced China's policies on vigorously promoting standardization in the field of carbon peak and neutrality and priorities in the future.
Sun Zhen, First-class Inspector of the Department of Climate Change, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, expounded China's progresses in mitigating and adapting to climate change, and the construction of national carbon market. Noelia Garcia Nebra, Head of Sustainability in ISO, introduced ISO's important role in responding to climate change. Also, Sun Liang, Associate Researcher of CNIS, gave a keynote speech on China's standardization work of carbon peak and neutrality and its achievements.
During the "From national adaptation plans to global climate action" side event, the attendees discussed how to carry out adaptation plans by using standards. Xiao Han introduced China's progresses and achievements in adaptation standardization. Zhang Xiaoxin, Associate Researcher of CNIS and ISO Climate Action Coordinator, undertook the planning and liaison work of the event.
The two side events pool the wisdom of all parties, providing a high-end platform for exchanges of policies on green and decarbonized transformation as well as cases of standardization application and practice at home and abroad. The events promotes China's standardization policies, actions and achievements to tackle climate change, and facilitates the communication and cooperation of domestic and international standardization bodies in this field.
