The 13th plenary meeting of ISO/TC 282 on water reuse held in Portugal

Date: 11 5, 2026
The 13th plenary meeting of ISO/TC 282, Water reuse, was held on October 19-23 in Lisbon, Portugal. The meeting was attended by more than 50 representatives from member countries including China, Canada, France, Japan, Portugal, Singapore, India, South Korea, Sweden, Israel, Iran, Cyprus, and Bolivia.

The China National Institute of Standardization (CNIS), as the domestic technical counterpart for ISO/TC 282 and its subcommittees, led a Chinese delegation of more than 20 experts from Tsinghua University, the Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences, China Architecture Design & Research Group, and other institutions and enterprises. The delegation closely tracked the latest developments in international standardization in the field of water reuse and participated deeply in the technical discussions of the plenary, subcommittees, and working groups.

During the meeting, the Chinese delegation further advanced the development process of several standards drafts for water reuse and presented new working items to attending experts, focusing on emerging directions such as rainwater resource utilization, climate resilience adaptation of water reuse systems, and circulating water systems in data centers.

ISO/TC 282 was established in 2013 and is responsible for standardization of water reuse of any kind and for any purpose. The committee currently has 28 P-members and 29 O-members and has published 46 international standards to date. It has four subcommittees: SC 1 on treated wastewater reuse for irrigation, SC 2 on water reuse in urban areas, SC 3 on risk and performance evaluation of water reuse systems, and SC 4 on industrial water reuse. Also, there are a Chair Advisory Group (CAG), and three working groups, WG 2 on terminology, WG 3 on water systems for biopharma industries, and WG 4 on water circulation.

China has been deeply engaged in the international standardization work for water reuse and has established a solid foundation in this field. CNIS will continuously leverage its role as the domestic technical counterpart and coordinate domestic efforts across industry, academia, research, and application. It will steadily promote the implementation of China-led international standards on water reuse, actively share the research and practical achievements of China’s water recycling and reclaimed water application, and use standardization to support the sustainable use of global water resources.
