Date: 2022-03-22    Source:CNIS

Biodiversity means the co-existence of many different animals and plants to keep the balance of the environment, which usually consists of genetic diversity, species diversity and ecosystem diversity.

As a vital link of the circulation, human has vastly affected and rebuilt the landscape of the earth, which has tremendously influenced creatures' behavior and existence. To protect the sole fragile planet that we rely on, it is essential to avoid or at least slow down biodiversity loss. And that is where international standards can shine.

The bio-tech research team from the Food and Agriculture Sub-Institute of CNIS has led the development of a new work item proposal, ISO/NP 13208-1, Biodiversity-Vocabulary-Part 1: General terms. This work item is approved by ISO/TC 331, Biodiversity, which was set up in 2020 to offer international guidance, principles, requirements, framework and supporting tools for global stakeholders. The proposal is the first project to be approved since the establishment of ISO/TC 331.

CNIS has been working on relevant biodiversity researches since it became the counterpart of ISO/TC 331 in June 2021. Dr. Wu Qi from the Sub-Institute introduced the proposal and won a overall recognition of all members of the technical committee on the first meeting of ISO/TC 331 in 2021, which was listed as one of the prior projects.

CNIS will work with Chinese and foreign experts to further contribute to international standardization work on biodiversity.
