Important progress made in the revision of ISO 9000

07 08, 2026

The fifth edition of ISO 9000, Quality management-Fundamentals and vocabulary, revised by the ISO/TC 176/SC 1 on concepts and terminology, successfully passed the final vote and was published in May. This milestone indicates that the revision of ISO 9000 ushers in a substantial overhaul of the international fundamental concept and vocabulary system of quality management.

As the fundamental standard in the field of quality management, ISO 9000 provides unified basic concepts and vocabularies to facilitate the comprehension and application of standards for quality management systems. While maintaining the overall stability of the seven quality management principles, the revision further refines its vocabulary and concept system. As Chinas domestic counterpart to ISO/TC 176, CNIS has mobilized quality management experts nationwide to participate actively in the revision of ISO 9000.

Compared with ISO 9000:2015, ISO 9000:2026 expands its terminologies from 146 to 184 and broadens core concepts from 5 to 22. It restructures into a more systematic and complete framework consisting of fundamental concepts + supplementary concepts, and adds key concepts covering risk-based thinking, the circular economy and emerging technologies, so as to better meet the new requirements for organizational quality management practices in the context of digital transformation and sustainable development.

Moving forward, CNIS will keep in step with international progress to accelerate the revision of the national standard GB/T 19000-2016, giving full play to the vital role of standards in supporting the effective operation of domestic quality management system and serving the high-quality national economic and social development.
