ISO standard project on wushu training services approved

03 24, 2026

The proposal for the standard project ISO 29998, Education and learning services-General requirements and guidelines for leisure and performance-oriented wushu (martial arts) training services, proposed by CNIS, was recently approved by ISO. It is the first approved ISO standard project on wushu training services, marking another solid step forward in the internationalization process of Chinese wushu.

Wushu has a long history. It is not only a treasure of traditional Chinese culture, but also a common cultural heritage of all mankind, serving as an important window for the world to perceive China s charm. However, there has been a lack of unified standards for wushu training across the world for a long time. Great differences in teaching systems, technical levels, and coach qualifications have become a key bottleneck for spreading wushu internationally.

This standard project will clarify the terminology and definitions, coach qualifications, learning environment, training plans, learning assessment, safety management, and risk prevention and control of wushu training services, establish an internationally unified quality benchmark and discourse system, and ensure that global learners can enjoy safe, professional, and high-quality wushu training services.

Liu Shaopeng, President of Songshan Shaolin Wushu College, and Wang Nana, Associate Research Fellow of CNIS, will jointly serve as the project leaders of the standard. They will cooperate with experts from ISO members in the U.S., Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Kenya, Dominica, and Zambia and other countries, to jointly set unified rules for global wushu training services, promote the exchange and cooperation of wushu training under different cultural backgrounds, and provide solid technical support for the development of global wushu training-related industries and cross-border trade.
