07 08, 2025

The 30th plenary meeting of ISO/TC 37 on language and terminology was held in Takamatsu of Japan from June 21 to 27, 2025 in a hybrid form.

The plenary meeting attracted over 200 representatives from over 30 countries such as China, U.K., Germany, U.S., Japan, and South Korea, as well as international organizations such as the International Business Communication Standards (IBCS), International Information Centre for Terminology (Infoterm), and World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). More than 50 relevant meetings were held including meetings of various subcommittees and working groups.

ISO/TC 37 is mainly engaged in the standardization work related to the description, resources, technologies, and services of terminology, translation, interpretation, and other language activities in a multilingual information society. It has 5 subcommittees, 3 working groups, and 1 joint working group.

As the secretariat of both ISO/TC 37 and ISO/TC 37/SC 1, CNIS sent three Chinese representatives to attend the meetings, including Cao Xinyu, Manager of ISO/TC 37 and ISO/TC 37/SC 1, and Dr. Wang Haitao and Dr. Zong Jianfang as registered ISO experts.

During the meetings, experts from various countries had discussions on topics including the development and implementation of international standards, internal structure of the committee, scope of work, and liaison and cooperation. The proposals of ISO/PWI 24617-16 and ISO/PWI 24617-19 under the leadership of China were discussed and recognized by participating experts, who unanimously agreed to start the NP voting as soon as possible.

In-depth discussions on the organizational construction of the committee enabled the resolution for establishing a subcommittee on language application and a special working group on AI-LLMs, with Dr. Wang Haitao from the Sub-institute of Fundamental Standardization of CNIS serving as the secretary of the working group.

While achieving fruitful results at the meetings, the Chinese delegation gained wide recognition from international counterparts and earnestly fulfilled the obligations as the secretariat of ISO/TC 37. The expert team of CNIS has further expanded the technical depth and cross-domain collaboration capabilities of the technical committee, and effectively promoted exchanges and cooperation of experts from different countries, making active contribution to the international standardization work.
